P.S. It's Sunday

Heart to Heart with Holley has started something neat over on her blog (well, she has started several neat things).  It's called P.S. It's Sunday.  P.S. means Prayer & Share.  Join in where you leave a comment asking for prayer, maybe pray for someone else and then leave a link of a post sharing something God is doing in your life or your heart for other people to read.  I have to say that my last post of something God is doing in my life was about  my trip to India...in December! Oh, I must do a better blogging job!

Anyway, go on over to Holley's blog.  She's a precious soul and you'll be glad you did.

If you'd rather not, but you would like prayer or to share a link here, please do so!  It would be my privilege to pray for you.

The Scarecrow - Book Review & Giveaway!

We have a winner!

I reviewed this book last month and the publisher asked if I'd like to host a giveaway! Well, heck yeah! I have three books to give to three lucky winners. The only requirement is that you be a resident of the continental US or Canada. Please let a comment and let me know you'd like to win the book. If you only read Christian fiction, please remember this is not a Christian fiction book. If you know someone who would like it, enter for them!

You can win more entries by posting a link to this blog and/or sharing the link with friends on Twitter! Just leave a different comment for each thing you did. I'll draw for the winners after I return from my Savannah trip on Monday night!!! So, come on - let's get to entering and sharing the link!

The Scarecrow
by Michael Connelly

Product Description
Forced out of the Los Angeles Times amid the latest budget cuts, newspaperman Jack McEvoy decides to go out with a bang, using his final days at the paper to write the definitive murder story of his career.

He focuses on Alonzo Winslow, a 16-year-old drug dealer in jail after confessing to a brutal murder. But as he delves into the story, Jack realizes that Winslow's so-called confession is bogus. The kid might actually be innocent.

Jack is soon running with his biggest story since The Poet made his career years ago. He is tracking a killer who operates completely below police radar--and with perfect knowledge of any move against him. Including Jack's.

My Review:
This was the first Michael Connelly book I have ever read and boy have I missed out on a great author. This story had more twists and turns and surprises, but they were all well done. Sometimes when a story line is intricate, I find that I need to almost make an outline to keep up with everything that is going on. That was not the case with this book. The characters were well developed.

This is not a Christian book and the publisher cautioned me about the graphic details given about the various crimes. Honestly, I didn't find anything too graphic about the crime scenes. The only problem I had with the book was the language. The language was a little rough at times, but it was keeping in the storyline (and again, it's not a Christian fiction book, so...)

If you like suspenseful crime novels, then this is certainly the book for you. If you've never read anything by Michael Connelly, then by all means, check him out! This novel will stay with me for a while! Updated: I've thought about this book and its content often. It's really a great book.

The Noticer - Book Review

The Noticer

Sometimes, all a person needs is a little perspective.
Jacketed Hardcover
A new story of common wisdom from the bestselling author of The Traveler's Gift

Orange Beach, Alabama is a simple town filled with simple people. But like all humans on the planet, the good folks of Orange Beach have their share of problems - marriages teetering on the brink of divorce, young adults giving up on life, business people on the verge of bankruptcy, as well as the many other obstacles that life seems to dish out to the masses.

Fortunately, when things look the darkest - a mysterious man named Jones has a miraculous way of showing up. An elderly man with white hair, of indiscriminate age and race, wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and leather flip flops carrying a battered old suitcase, Jones is a unique soul. Communicating what he calls "a little perspective," Jones explains that he has been given a gift of noticing things that others miss. "Your time on this earth is a gift to be used wisely," he says. "Don't squander your words or your thoughts. Consider even the simplest action you take, for your lives matter beyond
measure…and they matter forever."

Jones speaks to that part in everyone that is yearning to understand why things happen and what we can do about it.

Like The Traveler's Gift, The Noticer is a unique narrative is a blend of fiction, allegory, and inspiration. Gifted storyteller Andy Andrews helps us see how becoming a "noticer" just might change a person's life forever.

My review:
This was my first time to read anything by Andy Andrews. I was tickled to see he is from Orange Beach. I like seeing local Alabama folk in print! Plus, I've spent a good bit of time at Orange Beach and it allowed me to visualize the scenes.

I think the publisher gives enough information about this book without my adding to it. It's another gem of a book filled with useful information about how to live life. All you need is a little perspective and Mr. Andrews shows, through a story, how to get that little bit of perspective.

The book is also launching a website, The Noticer Project. It's a worldwide movement to "notice" the five most influential people in your life. The site says:
The important thing is that by noticing those who have made a difference for you, you not only acknowledge their contribution, but you may gain a new perspective on your own life.
Who will you notice? What area of your life do you need perspective? Maybe you're a parent and you want to make sure your child(ren) have perspective. This is a good book to read and pass along or buy for other people. It's a book you can either devour and take your time to read so you don't miss the treasures of wisdom hidden. I started out devouring the book and then I slowed down because I wanted to savor the words I was reading.

Check out the book and check out the website. You'll be glad you did.

I'm a Winner!

Honestly, I've never won anything, not even the door prizes when there were only 3 of us there. But in the last 4 months, I have won many of the giveaways I have entered, especially the book giveaways! I attribute it all to Someone who is continually blessing me and showing me that if I keep believing Him, He will delight me (Ps. 37:4). His love surpasses knowledge that I may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. He is able to do immeasurably more than all I ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within me! (Eph. 3:19-20 NIV) Oh He is sooooo speaking my love language!

What a neat site!

I appreciate a good website and a place where info can be easily shared (this is one of the things I really like about blogger.com). There is a new site that I highly recommend to anyone who is in a group (in my case it's bible study groups, but it could be any type of group) and wants an easy way to communicate and share with each other.
Here's what the site says:
Qlubb is a free, easy-to-use online group site. With online rsvp, sign-up sheets, custom URL, file/photo sharing, auto reminders and much more, Qlubb is the easiest way to organize and manage your group's events, activities and members. It's perfect for school classrooms, scout troops, sports teams, book clubs, hobbyists, religious groups, families, etc!
I set my site up for my Sunday school group and my Wednesday bible study group (I guess I could have set up different ones for each group...maybe later - we'll see if they sign up!). I'm thinking about setting one up for my Celebrate Recovery team, as well.
If you're in the market for an online gathering place where all members can be involved, this is the place to go! www.qlubb.com
You'll be wanting to thank me, I just know it. So, You Are Welcome!

New Blog URL

I was so excited to be able to so easily change my blog addy from http://cathy-davis.blogspot.com to http://lattejust4me.blogspot.com (by the way, if you play on pogo, lattejust4me is my screen name - I'm just sayin'...). But, what I didn't think about was all the places I have my blog listed and how to change the addy! I think I just about got 'em all changed (or I've contacted people about changing them).
Have you had any trouble finding the blog if you are one of my many "followers"?

12 Things You Might Not Know about A Christmas Story

1. Which Oscar-winning star wanted to play Ralphie’s dad? Which actor went on to a seedy career in the adult film industry? Can you really get your tongue stuck to a metal pole? Here are a few tidbits to tide you over until the 24-hour Christmas Eve marathon on TBS.
Jack Nicholson was very interested in playing Ralphie’s dad. But casting (and paying) Jack would have meant doubling the budget, so he was removed from consideration. Director Bob Clark – who didn’t know Nicholson was interested at the time – says Darrin McGavin was the perfect choice, and I’d have to agree. I think Jack would have been too much of a scene-stealer.

2. What does Porky’s, the raunchy ’80s teen sex movie, have to do with a wholesome film like A Christmas Story? Bob Clark directed both – Porky’s in 1982 and A Christmas Story in 1983. If Porky’s hadn’t given him the professional and financial success he needed, he wouldn’t have been able to bring A Christmas Story to the big screen.

3. For anyone keeping count, Ralphie says he wants the Red Ryder BB Gun 28 times throughout the course of the movie. That’s approximately once every three minutes and 20 seconds.

4. Peter Billingsley, AKA Ralphie, has been good friends with Vince Vaughn since they both appeared in the CBS Schoolbreak Special (their version of the after-school special) in the early ’90s. He doesn’t do much acting these days, but he did make a surprise appearance on the “Vince Vaughn Wild West Comedy Show” in Memphis, Tenn., in 2005. Peter’s doing quite well for himself, though. He was the executive producer of Iron Man and had a brief bit as William Ginter Riva – I’ve seen Iron Man twice, but I can’t place his character. I’ll have to go back and look. Peter also executive produced Vince’s latest movie, Four Christmases (which he also had a cameo in), as well as 2006’s The Break-Up.

5. Mythbusters tested whether it was possible to get your tongue truly stuck on a piece of cold metal. Guess what? It is. So don’t triple dog dare your best friend to try it.

6. Scott Schwartz, who played Flick (who stuck his tongue to the frozen flagpole), was submerged in the adult film industry for a number of years. He got out in 2000 to try to become a mainstream actor again, but I can’t say he’s done much of note: Community College (“A love story between four dudes and their ability to get free drinks”) and Skinwalker, which starred ex-MTV veejay Jesse Camp, if that tells you anything. Joey Buttafuoco is in it, too, and gets billing over our poor Flick. Sad.

7. Next time you’re in Cleveland, you can visit the original house from the movie for only $7.50. It was sold on eBay in 2004 for $150,000. Collector Brian Jones bought the house and restored it to its movie glory and stocked it up with some of the original props from the film, including Randy’s snowsuit.

8. Director Bob Clark got the idea for the movie when he was driving in the car with a date. He heard Jean Shepherd on the radio doing a reading of his short story collection, “In God We Trust… All Others Pay Cash,” which included some bits that eventually ended up in A Christmas Story. Clark said he drove around the block for an hour until the program ended, which his date was not too happy about.

9. The Wonder Years was inspired by A Christmas Story. In fact, in one of the last few episodes, Peter Billingsley appeared as one of Kevin Arnold’s roommates.

10. The real Red Ryder BB Gun was first made in 1938 and was named after a comic strip cowboy. You can still buy it today for the low, low price of $44.99. But the original wasn’t quite the same as the one in the movie – it lacked the compass and sundial that both the Jean Shepard story and the movie call for. Special versions had to be made just for A Christmas Story.

11. While we’re talking shopping – you know you want the leg lamp. Put it in your window! Be the envy of your neighbors! It’s a Major Award! You can buy it here, but if you’re not feeling quite so flamboyant you can get a replica that serves as a nightlight for $14.99. The people who own the house also run a gift shop, and they sell pretty much everything you could possibly want from the movie – the decoder pin ($7.99), Lifebuoy soap ($3.99), the leg lamp variants mentioned above, and even pieces of the original house.

12. There’s a sequel of sorts, My Summer Story, which came out in 1994. Kieran Culkin plays Ralphie, Mary Steenburgen is his mom, and Charles Grodin is his dad. I’m not sure if it’s because of this movie or A Christmas Story, but whenever our dogs are running around together in a pack, my husband always yells, “It’s the Bumpus Hounds!”

Merry Christmas! Happy Holidays! Don’t shoot your eye out (kid).

Thank you, mentalfloss.com. I love this movie!!

Booked for the Holidays: Talking Tips

Go over to Mocha with Linda's site. As you can see from my little button over there, to the right, she is having a Booked for the Holidays giveaway! Today she is giving away Vicki Courtney's 5 Conversations You Must Have With Your Daughter.

(The following is from Linda's site.)

Vicki has done her homework and the book has many statistics regarding the culture our girls are facing. Yet it's not a dull listing of numbers and percentages or a doomsday prediction of dire warnings. And unless you live under a rock, your girl will not avoid being exposed to the "stuff that's out there." But just as we protect our children physically from diseases by immunizing them, this book provides information on how we can innoculate our daughters with the serum of God's truth so that they can recognize the lies the world feeds them. The 5 conversations, which have several chapters devoted to each of them, are:

1. You are more than the sum of your parts.
2. Sex is great . . . and worth the wait.
3. It’s OK to dream about marriage and motherhood.
4. Don’t be in such a hurry to grow up.
5. Girls gone wild are a dime a dozen—dare to be different

And the book also gives guidelines on how to have these conversations according to your daughter's stage of development: ages 5 and under, 6-11, and 12 and up.

AND, if you also notice, there is a button over there on the right for a book club staring on 1/5/09 for this book!

So, head on over to Mocha with Linda for a chance to win this great book! Good luck!

I probably shouldn't have...

First of all, I just have to say that there is a darn Woody woodpecker eating the wood on my house RIGHT NOW! Knock knock knock, he goes and GRRRRRRRRRRR, I go! I don't know how to get rid of him and he needs to GO AWAY!!!

Anyway, on to the post...Well, it's Saturday. I wanted to sleep in today but that wasn't in the books for me. My oldest told me yesterday that under NO CIRCUMSTANCES was she going to pick up my youngest from the youth leader's house (Ms. Pam who is FABULOUS!). Guess what time she had to be picked up? EIGHT EIGHT EIGHT in the morning! (I'm really going crazy on the CAPS, huh? I think it's Woody. He's frustrating me.)

*breathe in breathe out*

I woke up at 8:00 and threw on jammie bottoms, a sweatshirt over my tshirt, my black puppy paw socks and my knockoff dark blue crocs. I'm pretty certain I didn't brush my hair. I drove over to Ms. Pam's and went inside, had some breakfast and then we headed back home. Well, about an hour later, Kristen decided she wanted to go over to a friend's house, so we head back out. I'm thinking while I'm out, I'll stop at the library. I want some new books to read. So, being ever fearful I'll embarrass a child, I ask Kristen if I look ok to go to the library. She said she saw nothing wrong with how I looked. (Side note - make Kristen an eye appt.)

Well, I did go to the library, and I did get some books. But, in retrospect, I really shouldn't have gone out in public, but I did! What if someone nominated me to be on What Not to Wear and there was some secret footage happening? Oh the horror at being photographed in this "outfit". Does anyone else ever go out looking this un-put-together?

Hey, I got a nifty little email and I'd like to share it with you. I'm not real sure how I got the email, but I'm glad I did. It was an email for a free book! (Did they see me at the library and thought maybe I should just stay home???) The email recommends sharing the link for the book, so here you go! Jumble Pie by Melanie Lynne Hauser -- FUN! I just got my book (hey Woody isn't bugging me - my writing has calmed down a bit), but I haven't started reading yet. I hope you like it!

I guess that's all I got for now. After Tim Gunn's Guide to Style (oh he'd be ashamed of me too) is over, I'm thinking it'll be time to curl up with a book and read.

I hope you're having a great Saturday! How I wish I could be hanging out with you. (I'm certain I need some real life friends to hang out with...)

Neat-o Links!

I found some neat-o sites tonight and I wanted to share them! I believe I found them through Bloggy Giveaways (look for a giveaway carnival next week ~ I'm going to go through my Avon and/or Creative Memories for a giveaway. Heaven knows I have alot of both!).

Seems the big craze is vinyl lettering. I gotta admit - I am loving all the things I'm seeing with the lettering. I am loving the sayings on the walls and the thought of having something like that on my wall without having to try and paint it myself is extremely cool!

So, anyway, I went to Tip Junkie first and she has a ton of links to "mom shops". From there, I found this site My Tree House Treasures. She has some really cute products and none of them will break the bank.

Another giveaway site! Great homemade jewelry from RHBDesigns.

Leelou Blogs

Go check these sites out - I know it's helping me pass time on this Friday night.
